Rotary Centenary

The Lightwater Laike is the main annual fund-raising event organised by the Rotary Club of Ripon Rowels.

Sunday 9th November was quite simple a day not for the faint-hearted - cold, rain, mud - none of these stopped 200 hardy riders braving the elements for the benefit of worthwhile charities.

 RNIB and Henshaws Logos Henshaws Society for Blind People RNIB

The 2008 Lightwater Laike Mountain Bike Race took place on SUNDAY 9th NOVEMBER at Lightwater Valley, Ripon.
The event consists of a track laid out around Lightwater Valley with a lap length of approximately 6 miles.

The main charitable beneficiaries this year are;

  • Ripon Club for the Blind
  • Harrogate, Ripon & District Society for the Blind
  • The Harrogate Branch of the RNIB
  • Henshaws Society for Blind People
Club Information Centenary Year About Rotary
RowelThe Rotary Club of Ripon Rowels, whose name comes from the items made by former craftsmen spurriers of the City of Ripon, came into being in 1990 as an offspring of the Rotary Club of Ripon, which itself was formed in 1927.

Rotary Centenary2005 was Rotary’s Centennial year, and to celebrate that fact, the Rotary Club of Ripon Rowels joined together with their Mother Club to design, finance and re-erect seven ‘sanctuary crosses’ around the Ripon boundary in the same sites they were originally placed all those years ago to mark the area of sanctuary afforded by the Church.

Paul HarrisRotary was founded in 1905 when Paul Harris, a Chicago Attorney, met with three friends, a Coal Dealer, a Mining Engineer and a Merchant Tailor.
Meeting in “Rotation” at each others place of business, they soon resolved that there could be a higher purpose of service to others in the community.

Club History Lightwater Laike Rotary Ethos
Rotary WheelOur Club was formed in 1990 as an offshoot of our Mother Club, the Rotary Club of Ripon.
At that time it was recognised that there were a lot of people living in Ripon who would make good Rotarians but were unable to make the lunchtime commitment of the existing Rotary Club.

Mountain Bike TrailThe Lightwater Laike Mountain Bike Race is now in its 18th year, and all proceeds, as always, are donated to charity.
Easy online registration is available, and full race results are posted on the website along with a comprehensive event photo gallery.
Each year the event draws more and more interest, and we expect this year to be better than ever.
