2005 was Rotary’s Centennial
year, and to celebrate that fact, the Rotary Club of Ripon Rowels
joined together with their Mother Club to design, finance
and re-erect seven ‘sanctuary crosses’ around the
Ripon boundary in the same sites they were originally placed
all those years ago to mark the area of sanctuary afforded by
the Church.
This will enable the people of today, both locals
and visitors to re-discover some past heritage whilst hopefully
will also be a lasting memory of Rotary’s centenary. There
is a ‘walking route’ leaflet available, specifically
designed for people to observe all the crosses first hand and
understand their significance in days gone by.
This is obtainable from the Tourist Information Office in Ripon.
The designs that
were used for each of the crosses was the subject of
a competition amongst the school children of Ripon and its surrounds.
Their best designs were chosen and have been erected, a different one on
each site.
It is hoped that the crosses and the designated ‘walk’ will
help to serve as a lasting memorial locally to Rotary’s
achievement of 100 years of service to the community worldwide.
